I'm going to introduce something new to letterboxing in South East
Florida....trail magic! If you have never heard of trail magic, let
me explain. In long distance hiking, such as the Appalachian Trail,
there is a strange phenomenon that occurs called trail magic.
Sometimes it comes in the form of cold juice boxes floating down a
stream or a hot breakfast station set up to feed hungry hikers for
free. Whatever it is, it is a rare occurrence and always spontaneous.
Hikers never know when they will run into it and some never do. One
of the things that makes it so special is that it is RARE!
I am going to RARELY AND SPONTANEOUSLY going to start putting an extra
baggie clearly marked as "trail magic" with instructions in my boxes.
The instructions will help people to understand this is not a
geocaching box or a hybrid box. I may do this with a new box or I may
do it in an old box while checking on maintenance. Obviously food is
a big no-no! I don't want to attract critters to the boxes. Examples
of my ideas for trail magic include: a small stamp or carving block to
be carved by the finder, temporary tattoo's for the kiddies, a dollar
bill, a special already hand carved stamp etc.
What do you all think of this?

I like the idea! There is a real basic pure joy in discovering a "prize" in a totally unexpected place or at atime when you are thinking of other things. Sorta sends you off feeling extra good about life in general. In the past (usually when I set out a new letterbox) I would occasionally include a little gift in a baggie marked "for the first finder". Also, I like to leave little toy prizes in some of the letterboxes we go out & find. I don't do this much, just on a whim. Good luck with your idea....

If you were to label it First Finder's Prize, then people won't get confused
(I think!).

Putting little toys inside letterboxes you find may not be appreciated
by the Planter as it can turn them into geocaches. The stamps then can
be mistaken for geocache goodies and get removed by subsequent finders
of the toy stash.

I stopped at a rest area to get a box yesterday and there were Boy Scouts with donuts and coffee :-)
When the weather is cool enough, I leave a Kit Kat for the first finder--fortunately I live in a state where the first finders move fairly quickly! It's a cute idea, but I'd definitely want things to be labelled well so people don't confuse with geocaches or anything.

---Good point Don. If it's your box, your rules but please don't put anything except a HH in
someone else's box.

Hi to all in Lb land, i think simple Maps of the surrounding area placed in a letterbox is quite rewarding to the finder , Maps are sort of magical in themselves as they can show interesting things that you are close to. ........ Peace & Love .... budster of the Catskills
